The Russian government plans to create conditions for the increase of purchases of innovative rail cars by the country’s leading cargo carriers, as well as for more active retirement of outdated cars, according to an official spokesman of Russian RZD.
According to RZD, at present the Russian fleet of freight cars is estimated at about 1,221 million units, which is about 300,000 more than required for the transportation of existing cargo volumes in the country.
According to RZD, these old rail cars occupy the majority of Russian station tracks, which adversely affects the capacity of the national railways, especially in the places of mass loading or unloading.
