India plans modernization of national railway sector
Published: Fri, 2015-03-20 09:00India plans to invest up to US$138 billion in the development of national railways over the next 5 years, according to Suresh Prabhu, India’s Minister of Railways.
This should significantly improve the current situation in the Indian Railways, which, so far, has been unprofitable.
Thanks to planned investments, the capacity of the railways will increase from 21 million to 30 million passengers per day, while in the case of cargo from 1 billion to 1.5 billion tonnes of cargo per year.
This will also allow to increase the overal length of Indian Railways from the current 114,000 km up to 138,000 km and the average speed of the trains from 110-130 km/ h to 160-200 km/h.
