International consortium plans new rail line from Argentina to Chile
Published: Mon, 2014-11-17 11:56An international consortium of Chilean Empresas Navieras SA, the Japanese Mitsubishi Corporation, Italian Geodata and Argentinian Contreras Hermanos is considering investing up to US$ 10 billion in the implementation of a project for the building of a railway tunnel and line from Argentina to Chile.
According to analysts, building of the transport corridor currently remains one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in South America. In addition to complex reconstruction and increasing of the capacity of the existing rail infrastructure in Argentina and Chile, the project also involves building of the 204-kilometer line through the border between the two countries with a tunnel of the length of 52.5 kilometers.
Russian railway monopoly RZD was also named among the participants of the project, despite statements of its management that it currently has no plans to invest funds in it.
