Bulgaria secures €400M for Sofia metro expansion

Under the plan, the funds to expand Sofia’s red and blue metro lines will be provided to Bulgaria as part of the EU’s 2014-2020 financial framework, according to the country’s Minister of Transport Ivaylo Moskovski.
The two extensions of the red line, to the Sofia airport and the business park in the capital’s Mladost 4 district, are complete in 82% and 70%, respectively, reported local news agency Novinite. Should works continue accordingly to the set schedule, the first extension is expected to be completed by the beginning of April 2015, and the second by the end of April.
Meanwhile, local authorities are eyeing the construction of a third metro line for the Bulgarian capital.
The designed line is expected to be constructed with the use of funds obtained from the EU, according to local decision-makers.
Run by municipally-owned company Metropolitan, the metro in Sofia has two lines, adapted for a track gauge of 1,435 mm, and fitted with 27 stations. The three lines are designed to total 65 km, according to data released by Metropolitan. Currently, it is estimated that the red and blue line carry a total of 320,000 passengers per day.
Sofia's municipal area has a population of more than 1.4 million.
