Georgian government to sell minority stake in national operator
Published: Wed, 2015-03-04 09:48The government of Georgia has not ruled out the possibility of selling a minority stake in Georgian Railways, Georgia’s national railway operator, with the aim to generate additional funds for its development, according to Giorgi Kvirikashvili, Georgia’s Economy Minister.
It is planned that at the initial stage the 25% stake will be sold.
The length of the lines of the Georgian railway, including the way to Abkhazia is about 2340 kilometers.
At the same time the Abkhazian section of the rail line, which connects Russia with Armenia, has been closed since 1992-1993 war.
At present the rail line carries about 20 million tonnes of cargo per year, while its maximum capacity is 30 million tonnes.
Of these, nearly 65 percent account for transit cargo, coming mainly from Azerbaijan and Armenia.
