DB eyes €700M rail infrastructure projects in Nordrhein-Westfalen
Published: Mon, 2015-02-16 13:17Deutsche Bahn has unveiled plans to invest about €700 million in a wide range of projects aiming to modernise and overhaul the rail infrastructure in the country’s north-western region of Nordrhein-Westfalen. The investments are to be carried out this year.
Under the plan, the German firm is aiming to upgrade more than 700 km of rail lines in the region, reports local broadcaster Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR). In addition to this, in 2015, rail upgrade projects are to be also carried out on a total of 12 bridges in Nordrhein-Westfalen.
As part of the planned investments, Deutsche Bahn will overhaul the high-speed rail line between Köln and Frankfurt. Works are expected to be performed this spring, and, as a result, the connection will be shut down on four weekends, starting in mid-April, according to data from the company.
The planned works will be carried out by DB Netz AG, a subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn responsible for managing German rail infrastructure.
Michael Hassler, a company representative of DB Netz, said the firm is aiming to perform the works with as little disruption to passengers as possible. This said, "it is impossible to avoid any changes in the rail schedule," Hassler said.
Another major investment is to be carried out on the rail link between Köln and Aachen, where DB Netz will modernise 26 km of rail track.
The German firm is operated by a total workforce of close to 36,000 employees. In 2013, DB Netz managed a rail network fitted with a total length of 61,153 km, according to figures from the company.
Nordrhein-Westfalen is the most populous region of Germany, with a population of more than 17.5 million.
