Finnish – Estonian rail tunnel would boost competitiveness
Published: Thu, 2015-02-12 08:00A recent survey shows that tunnel and a rail link under the Gulf of Finland would enhance the Industrial competitiveness of both Finland and Estonia in the long run.
Investigation, which was made by Sweco, Kohateam and Finansakadeemia have been ordered by the Finnish and Estonian traffic authorities.
The analysis has been looking especially if the tunnel is technically feasible and what kind of financial implications there would be.
- This is the most concrete step taken since the idea of Tallinn tunnel was born. Unquestionable, it would be advisable to investigate in the tunnel, at least if the planning of Rail Baltic also goes on, said Pekka Sauri, Deputy Mayor of Helsinki to the Finnish Radio.
Rail Baltic is a planned rail link from Tallinn to Central Europe.
The most profitable would be a half-hour journey between Helsinki and Tallinn. If the Rail Baltic line is going to be built it will take two hours to travel to Warsaw.
The provisional cost of the tunnel is estimated to be between 9 and 13 billion euros. According to the investigation 40-50 percent would be funded with government money and EU grants.
According to the investigation this funding would cover operating costs through the indirect revenue which tunnel brings. In addition, the indirect earnings are going to at least partly cover the investment sum.
