A new railway tunnel, which will be built under the Gulf of Finland will link Helsinki and Tallinn. The commissioning of the tunnel will allow to reduce travelling time between the cities to only half an hour.
The length of the tunnel will be 105 km, 56 km of which will be built under the seabed. The depth of the tunnel will vary in the range of 150-200 m depending on the underlying rock. Estimated cost of construction 9-13 billion euros. About half of the funds for the project will be provided by the EU.
The tunnel between Helsinki and Tallinn is only part of a new Rail Baltica railway line. This road will connect Helsinki with Berlin (and potentially - Venice), passing through Tallinn, Riga, Kaunas and Warsaw.
