Helsinki transit company celebrates 70th anniversary
Published: Mon, 2015-04-27 14:24Helsinki City Transit Company, HST, was founded 70 years ago and it is celebrated this year by cultural Society Art line project. The Metro, trams and Suomenlinna fortress ferry will be beautified with city dwellers ' art.
Part of the art that will be exhibited in public transport is commissioned by the artists, but the public may also take part. An open art search lasted to end of March. Anyone could come up with ideas, which will be exposed later this year.
- We have received over 40 suggestions. It is dance, performance, programs for children and of course visual Arts and paintings. Some contribution takes a full month and then there where happenings that just takes thirty minutes, so there are many kinds of contributions to fill rail stations with, told says Annika Niskanen, who is an artist and coordinator of the Art Board.
- About ten of the public's contribution will also be realized.
The HST's activities include Helsinki metro and trams in Helsinki, which is the main transportation means in the City Centre's public transport. The extensive tramway network is used daily by about 200 000 passengers.
Each year a total of over 54 million journeys are made by tram, with increasing tendency. Similarly like in the Stockholm Metro, there are works of art in Helsinki Metro since several years on dozens of stations.
HKL metro transport, which is responsible for the Metro and railway maintenance, transported nearly 62 million passengers annually.
