Slovenian Railways (Slovenske železnice) has unveiled plans to acquire five new diesel locomotives.
Under the plan, a tender to purchase the locomotives is to be launched by the railway operator in autumn 2015, reports local daily Vecer. Currently, the Slovenian company is drafting relevant tender documentation.
Slovenian Railways are reportedly aiming to add five new locomotives to its fleet due to the increasing costs of maintenance and service of the diesel locomotives the company has in its fleet. It is expected that the new units will allow Slovenian Railways to cut these costs in the long term.
The company operates a passenger rolling stock fleet which includes 70 diesel multiple units (DMUs), 38 electric multiple units (EMUs), as well as four electric locomotives and eight diesel locomotives. In addition to this, the firm’s rail freight subsidiary owns 70 electric locomotives and 70 diesel locomotives.
The amount of the planned acquisition was not disclosed by Slovenian Railways.
Based in the country's capital Ljubljana, the company operates rail services on Slovenia's railway network with a length of 1,228 km. Of these, about 898 km are single-track, and 330 km are double-track, according to data from Slovenian Railways.
