RZD plans to reduce imports of components and equipment in the near future

Russian RZD plans to reduce share of imported equipment and components in its overal structure of purchases of rolling stock and equipment during the next several years, according to the company.
At present total value of RZD’s purchases is estimated at 104 billion rubles (US$2,5 billion), of which approximately 30% account for imported products, according to Victor Alferov, Deputy Head of RZD’s department of Technical Policy.
According to him, the majority of imports currently account for avionics, which is currently not produced in Russia.
For example, the annual purchases of imported portable radios by RZD is estimated at 10,000 units. In addition, a significant amount of electronic components and electronic devices, and in particular chips, controllers are also by the company imported from abroad.
