Ukraine’s rolling stock maker Kriukov Rail Car Building Works (KVSZ) has unveiled plans to launch production of a new electric locomotive model for the country’s railway operator Ukrainian Railways.
The offered locomotive is to be fitted with a capacity of 7.4 MW, reports local daily RBK Ukraina. The new model could be used for the provision of both passenger and freight rail transportation services, according to the Ukrainian producer.
With the aim of modernising its fleet, in the forthcoming years, Ukrainian Railways is planning to replace as much as 1,200 locomotives with new units, as announced by Ukraine’s Minister of Infrastructure Andrey Pivovarsky in late 2014.
Should KVSZ and the railway company sign a contract for the procurement of electric locomotives, deliveries are to be launched in 2017, according to the information obtained by the daily.
Under the plan, the manufacturer will finance the production of a prototype. If the firm secures a contract from Ukrainian Railways, KVSZ could supply between 35 and 40 electric locomotives per year.
KVSZ is based in Kremenchuk, in Ukraine's central part.
