Ukranian Railways, Ukraine’s national railway operator, posted a 24.5% decline of rail cargo transportations in the first quarter of the current year, compared to January-March 2014.
According to the company, this figure reached only 77 million tonnes for the reporting period, which is one of the lowest figures for the last several years.
Among the major reasons of this are the destruction of rail infrastructure on the east of the country, as well as reduction of passenger rail transportations with Russia.
Currently the Ukranian government continues the reform of the national railway industry, one of the main elements of which will be the provision of an access to commercial rail operators to the national railway infrastructure.
