Under the plan, the two sections are to be enabled with a maximum speed of 160 km/h, and a load capacity of 22.5 tonnes per axle, the Romanian Ministry of European Funds (MFE) said in a statement.
The funds are to be acquired as part of the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) from the European Commission, the statement said.
"The amount allocated to Romania under this programme to finance various transport sector projects from the Cohesion Fund is about €1.23 billion. Under the first call for projects in Romania, the beneficiaries, including those who were associated with institutions based in other member states, submitted 14 project proposals worth about €1.2 billion," said Romanian Minister of European Funds Eugen Teodorovici, as quoted in the statement.
In addition to the two investments, other rail projects planned by the Romanian government include the carrying out of a revised feasibility study on the designed Craiova-Calafat rail link, which is to be fitted with a total length of 108 km, as well as the drafting a feasibility study of the planned 230-km-long Craiova-Drobeta Turnu Severin-Caransebeş rail link. To implement the two projects, the Ministry of European Funds has requested some €500,000 and €1.5 million from the European Commission, respectively.
The two rail links are to be enabled with a maximum speed of 100 km/h, and a load capacity of 22.5 tonnes per axle, according to data released by the Romanian ministry.
The funds are to be made available to projects in the 2014-2020 period, the statement said.
