Energy-saving trams tested in Krakow
Published: Mon, 2015-03-16 12:33Krakow City Transport has started testing its new energy-efficient Solaris Tramino trams, with a three-month trial phase now ongoing on the city’s Line 1.
Powered by four 105kW traction motors, these trams are fitted with super-capacitors to store regenerated braking energy. Solaris has said they will be the first in Poland to use regenerative braking, cutting the amount of energy that they draw from the network by 20-30%.
The 32m articulated trams are step-free and consist of five carriages. Around half of Krakow’s trams are now low-floor. This figure will increase when 36 new vehicles start to arrive from PESA Bydgoszcz later this year.
