Increased freight traffic delays Amtrak schedule
Published: Fri, 2014-12-05 09:42Amtrak declared newly that long delays have become regular this fall for the Lake Shore Limited line, which runs from Chicago to New York and Boston and stops in Erie.
Amtrak is blaming the delays on increased freight traffic by CSX and Norfolk Southern, or NS Railway, which own the rail lines Amtrak uses. The Lake Shore Limited arrives in Erie on CSX tracks.
The Lake Shore Limited's on-time performance was 22.1 percent in October, according to Amtrak's latest statistics. The line's on-time performance was 28.9 percent over the last 12 months.
Train interference caused 57.3 percent of the Lake Shore Limited's delays in October, Amtrak said. It linked 65.1 percent of those delays to Norfolk Southern, 20.3 percent to CSX and 7.7 percent to Amtrak.
- If the Amtrak’s Lake Shore Limited gets behind a slow freight train, they can't pass it, Amtrak spokesperson Halloran said.
Amtrak expects the delays to continue through Jan. 12 because of "heavy freight congestion," Amtrak said in a statement. "Over recent weeks, both east and westbound trains have typically encountered delays of more than three hours."
