First freight train approached Teesport
Published: Thu, 2014-12-11 10:30The first Freightliner train recently arrived at PD Ports' new intermodal terminal at Teesport
The new railhead is part of a £3M investment by PD Ports to improve Teesport's connectivity. It was previously revealed that Freightliner would close its nearby committed terminal in Wilton and transfer the business to PD Ports, as the anchor client, although the facility is open to other rail container carriers.
The first service indicates the establishment of new intermodal connections between Teesport, Felixstowe and Southampton. Prospects for opening further new services to Scotland, the Midlands and the North West are expected in line with market demand.
The rail terminal, which was built for PD Ports by Owen Pugh Construction, enhances Teesport's connectivity and complements the London Gateway feeder service operated by BG Freight Line.
Teesport is a large sea port located in the unitary authority of Redcar and Cleveland, in the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, Northern England.
Owned by PD Ports, it is located 5.6 miles (9 km) from the North Sea and 3.1 miles (5 km) east of Middlesbrough, on the River Tees. Teesport is currently the third largest port in the United Kingdom and amongst the ten biggest in Western Europe, handling over 56 million tons of domestic and international cargo per year.
