Poland’s Rzeszow eyes new monorail investment
Published: Mon, 2014-11-10 14:00The municipal authorities of Rzeszo have unveiled plans to build a new monorail line in the Polish city. The project was designed for local authorities by Canada’s Bombardier Transportation which carried out São Paulo’s Innovia 300 system, a 24 km-long monorail line between the Brazilian city’s Vila Prudente and Cidade Tiradentes.
As is the case with the majority of Poland’s major public transportation investments, local authorities aim to co-finance the project with funding provided by the European Union.
“We are aiming to acquire funds from the EU,” said Maciej Chlodnicki, a spokesperson for the mayor of Rzeszow.
Municipal authorities estimate that the planned project will necessitate an investment of between PLN 250 million ($76 million) and PLN 300 million ($91 million), reported local business daily Dziennik Gazeta Prawna.
Under the plan, the monorail line will be fitted with a length of about 14 km, and it will consists of 10 stations. The planned stations include the city’s main bus and train stations with the campuses of the University of Rzeszow and the Rzeszow University of Technology. According to the municipal authorities, the project could be carried out by 2020.
Should the project be implemented, Rzeszow would be the region's first city to launch a monorail line.
Rzeszow is the capital and largest city in Poland’s southern Podkarpackie region. The municipality has a population of more than 185,000.
