VR centralizes maintenance of rolling material
Published: Thu, 2015-02-05 11:20Finnish railway company VR Group finishes its operations at the depot in Turku gradually until the end of the year. The goal is to centralize the maintenance of the trains where there is much more traffic and many customers.
All employees at the depot were offered work at either the maintenance of trains or elsewhere within the VR group facilities.
Collaborative negotiations at the depot in Turku were completed on 20 January. The negotiations, which began in early December, included all the employees at the depot in Turku and the maintenance staff who had that depot as a workplace. A total of 79 persons were involved in the negotiations.
– Data in maintenance is offered in Helsinki, Hyvinkää, Pieksämäki and Kouvola, Oulu, Tampere. Emergency preparedness remains in Turku. Activities are organized in collaboration with the regional rescue services of Southwest Finland, says maintenance Director Jari Hankala.
During the negotiations, the staff representatives offered different options for the closure. The cost savings for these options was estimated to be far less than in the situation where the depot is closed completely.
– Cost savings occur when works can be placed so that they support the effective use of the train stock. Efficiency can be increased even by centralizing the production of replacement parts. In addition, we can get rid of the depot locations in Turku, reducing fixed costs. The annual it will save significant amounts of money. We talking about several million euros, says Jari Hankala.
VR Group has terminals in Helsinki, Turku, Tampere, Kouvola, Joensuu and Oulu. In addition, the company has shops in Hyvinkää and Pieksämäki and a technology unit in Helsinki that offer expert services.
