The Chamber of Commerce of Western Sweden demands better commuter conditions. The railway between Gothenburg and Borås is “deplorable”, Chamber of Commerce comments. It prevents people from one village to seek jobs in the other. Western Chamber of Commerce suggests that the present rail contribute to three-four hours longer working week, which is doing great difference.
A new study made by the Western Chamber of Commerce shows the great potential of increased commuting between Borås and Gothenburg. The mileage between Helsingborg- Malmö rails is equal to Borås - Gothenburg – that in the past was considered as Sweden's worst rail.
The Chamber of Commerce has interviewed 220 people who commute today between Helsingborg and Malmö. The purpose was to find out why this line provides much shorter travel time for the commuters than rail between Borås and Gothenburg. In addition, goal was also to find out why the commuters add each week three-four hours more on commuting than the travelers on Scanian line in Southern Sweden.
Nine out of ten respondents think that faster commuter conditions are very important for their accommodation and job situation.
– These very high figures indicate that a lot more inhabitants Borås would look for jobs in Gothenburg and vice versa, if there was a faster shuttle option. Today, it is certainly that many are not even seeing the opportunity, says Stephen Gustavsson, economic director of the Chamber of Commerce.
According to the Chamber of Commerce study, more than three out of four, would choose to change jobs or even move if commuter conditions between Borås and Gothenborg were similar good as between Helsingborg and Malmö.
Even the companies, according to the Chamber of Commerce, would have greater opportunity to hire more persons with the right skills.
- We have seen companies that have chosen to move from our region because of the difficulty in finding the people with right skills. A new faster railroad would change everything, says Marcus Holhammar, regional manager of the Chamber of Commerce in Western Sweden.
In their previous report, the Chamber of Commerce examined also the average speed of trains on routes between Sweden's 20 largest cities. The report showed that the train between Borås and Gothenburg is by far the slowest.
