German Siemens and French Alstom will participate in the tender for the signing contract with the SNCB Holding, Belgian railway company, on the installation of a new security system to prevent movement of trains on the red light.
The value of the contract is 1 billion euros. It is planned that the winner of the tender will be announed in June and July 2013. The new technology will be introduced on the entire rail network of Belgium by 2022.
This contract is part of a major program worth 3.85 billion euros to modernize the Belgian railway system. The program was developed after the head-on collision of two trains in February 2010, which killed 19 people.
