At this year’s International Association of Public Transport (UITP), the rail equipment manufacturer Bombardier presented its newest technology, the INNOVIA Monorail 300 system, which is game changing as it offers similar capacity to a metro.
Additionally it´s light infrastructure reduces the construction price and the implementation schedule by up to half, bringing quality of life benefits sooner and more cost effectively. Requiring no major infrastructure or civil works, it offers capacity of up to 48,000 passengers per hour per direction. Bombardier was contracted in late 2010 to design, supply and install a 24 km, 17-station monorail line in São Paulo, set to be the world’s highest capacity monorail, connecting Vila Prudente and Cidade Tiradentes, with a maximum capacity of 48,000 passenger per hour per direction, or 500,000 per day. This journey currently takes almost two hours and will be reduced to approximately 50 minutes with the new Monorail. The first section of the new line, connecting the stations of Vila
Prudente and Oratorio is predicted to start passenger service in early 2014, followed by
another 2 sections before the end of 2016.
