
Latvia to increase capacity of domestic railways
Published: Mon, 2013-07-01 14:11The capacity of Latvian railways should increase from the current 60 million tons to 80 million tons of freight by 2015, according to Eric Shmuksts, vice-president of Latvijas dzelzcel, Latvia’s flagship railway operator.
According to him, this goal will be mainly achived through the development of infrastructure and its expansion. For example, by 2015 the company plans to complete the construction of a second track on the Skrīveri – Krustpils section, which is part of the East – West rail corridor.
In addition, there are also plans for the modernization of alarm systems, telecommunications and power supply on the country’s railways.
