China's high speed rail network continues to grow at a blistering pace. Last Friday, over 3200 new rail lines were commissioned, including one line passing through the troubled Xinjiang region.
State-run CCTV channel aired the first trip with a high speed train leaving the city of Lanzhou, heading for Xinjiang's capital Urumqi.
The 1800 km long rail line runs through many scenic landscapes, including the Great Wall of China. The travel time will be cut by half, i.e. twelve hours.
Two other high speed rail lines opened simultaneously last Friday, running from Guangzhou, near Hong Kong in the South, to Guiyang and Nanning respectively.
Construction of China's high speed train network begun as late as 1999, and has currently outgrown all other national high speed rail networks in the world.
