The Garibaldi-San Siro section of Milan's automatic Metro Line 5 in Italy has opened to the public, providing access to the San Siro football stadium by metro for the first time.
The 13km-long Line 5 of the Milan metro runs completely underground covers the city with 19 stations between Bignami and San Siro.
The line will be managed by ATM and when fully operational it will be able to serve 26,000 passengers an hour per direction.
Construction of this section was carried out by the Progetto Metro 5 consortium consisting of Alstom, Astaldi, Ansaldo STS, AnsaldoBreda and Milan's public transport company ATM.
For this project, Alstom carried out the design, production and installation of the tracks and associated third rail, the auxiliary and 750VDC traction substations, the medium and low-voltage electricity distribution network and the security and fire detection systems.
In addition, Alstom was responsible for the system of automatic platform screen doors that controls safe access to the trains.
In 2011, Milan signed a €872m ($1.18bn) concession agreement with Metro 5 for a 7km extension of Line 5.
The investment for this stretch of underground, including design activities and civil and technological works, was financed by the ministry of infrastructure, the city of Milan and private funds.
