New railway line from St. Petersburg to Pulkovo airport to be constructed
Published: Mon, 2014-12-29 15:15Georgy Poltavchenko, the governor of Russia’s St. Petersburg andVladimir Yakunin, head of RZD, have called on Russia’s President Vladimir Putin to provide funds for the building of a railway line to the Pulkovo airport from the city’s center.
The cost of the project is estimated at14 billion rubles (US$400 million). It is planned that the majority of funds will be allocated for the reconstruction of 12 km of the existing " St. Petersburg - Baltiysky – Shosseynay railway section, as well as building of the 5.4 km of a new "Shosseynay -Pulkovo airport " double-track railway line section.
According to St. Petersburg government, implementation of the project is an acute need as part of preparations of the city to the World Cup 2018.
In addition, the project also involves building of a railway terminal at the Pulkovo airport, reconstruction of the terminals of the Baltic railway station, as well as purchase of new rolling stock. Funding of the projects are expected to be provided by Aeroexpress, the operator of air rail link services in Moscow.
