Putin may provide funds to build rail link to St.Petersburg airport

The project involves building of a high-speed railway line
Georgy Poltavchenko, a governor of Russia’s St. Petersburg together with Vladimir Yakunin, president of RZD, have sent a second appeal to Russia’s President Vladimir Putin to allocate funds from the federal budget for the construction of a rail link, which will link the city’s Pulkovo airport with the center of St.Petersburg.
The project involves building of a high-speed railway line from the Pulkovo airport to the Baltic Station of the city. As part of the project is planned reconstruction of 12 km of existing railway track from the Baltic railway station to Shosseynaya station as well as building of 5.4 km of new double-track railway line from Shosseynaya to the terminal. The cost of construction is estimated at 14 billion rubles (US$300 million).
According to initial plans of the authorities of St. Petersburg, the majority of funds for the project should have been provided from the federal budget, however at the end of last year Russia’s Deputy Transport Minister Nikolay Asaul said that the project will not be realized, as the St. Petersburg government has not sent a request for funding of the project before the deadline. Instead of this, the administration of St. Petersburg has asked funds for the construction of the subway.
At the same, according to Yakunin and Poltavchenko, the needed funds for the project may be provided by a personal order of Russia’s President Vladimir Putin.
