Train window seat offers better wifi
Published: Tue, 2015-01-13 09:00The Finnish state railways VR has been criticized for unreliable internet connections on long-distance trains, but now the company is advising travelers to sit in the window seats for the best wifi during their journeys.
Internet users are best off using window seats on Finnish trains, announce VR. The company offers free wifi on long-distance trains, but has suffered complaints about the quality of the connections. A bad signal can be down to the metal shell of the train carriages, so according to VR sitting by the window can help.
The company says that a poor signal is most often caused by an operator’s black spot rather than any failings on the train itself. Those operators are reluctant to invest in new masts in the sparsely-populated areas where the train’s wifi is most likely to cut out.
“We’re expecting improvements at the end of the year, when the trains will be able to start using new LTE networks,” says VR’s data administration director Jukka-Pekka Suonikko.
In the meantime, Suinikko advises passengers to sit by the windows to get the best possible signal while browsing.
