London Underground (LU) in the UK has ended the refurbishment of 106 Northern line trains, as part of a two-year upgrade programme.
French rail firm Alstom partnered with LU for this project. Alstom's Morden and Golders Green Metro Traincare Centres have replaced 11km of line in the fleet as part of this programme.
In addition, the team has polished 15,688 windows to remove graffiti and changed 27,500 seat backs.
This mid-life refurbishing programme saw the replacement of 3.7 million items, which represents approximately 35,000 components a train, Alstom stated.
The Northern line fleet, which was built by Alstom, serves around one million people a day on weekdays and travels around 15 million kilometers a year.
LU recently contracted France-based NFM Technologies to design, manufacture and deliver two tunnel boring machines (TBM) to construct the Northern line extension.
As part of this project, two new stations will be built at Battersea and Nine Elms. They are expected to open in 2020.
