Sofia receives first Swing tram from PESA

Tram contract worth €33.2 million
Poland’s rolling stock manufacturer PESA Bydgoszcz SA has delivered the first low-floor Swing tram to Bulgaria’s capital Sofia.
In total, 20 trams will be supplied to local public transport company Stolichen Elektrotransport, the Polish company said in a statement. The deal is worth some €33.2 million ($45.2 million).
In the variant supplied to Sofia, the five-car Swing was fitted with a seating capacity for 41 passengers. The tram is adapted to a track gauge of 1009 mm. PESA said that the first Swing has already entered into service in the Bulgarian capital.
Under the plan, deliveries of the trams are scheduled to be completed by the end of May 2014, according to the Polish company.
Municipally-owned Stolichen Elektrotransport operates a tram track network of more than 263 km, according to figures released by the Polish company.
In addition to Sofia, other European cities which have ordered the Swing trams include Poland’s Warsaw, Gdansk and Szczecin, Hungary’s Szeged, and Romania’s Cluj.
PESA is headquartered in Bydgoszcz, Poland. In addition to trams, the manufacturer’s product range includes electric multiple units (EMUs), diesel multiple units (DMUs) and locomotives.
