China Railway Tunnel Group to build tunnel in Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan Railways, Uzbekistan’s national rail carrier, has signed an agreement with China Railway Tunnel Group on the building of a tunnel through the Kamchik mountain pass in Uzbekistan. The amount of the deal is estimated at $455 million.
Under the terms of the contract, the length of the new railway tunnel will be 19 kilometers. There are also plans for building of an adit tunnel, which is needed in case of emergency situations. The commissioning of both facilities is scheduled for July 2016.
Building of the tunnel will be part of another project, which involves building of a new Angren -Pape electrified railway line, which has the length of 129 kilometers. The road will pass through the Kamchik pass and link the Fergana Valley (the area of Andijan , Namangan and Ferghana regions in the east of the country) with another parts of Uzbekistan.
Funding of the project, which preliminary cost is estimated at $ 1.9 billion will take place by the loans from international financial institutions and the Uzbek government.
The Kamchik pass is located on the crest of the Kurama ridge. It has the height of more than 1,200 meters above sea level.
