Romania to modernise Bucharest
Published: Tue, 2014-09-16 12:36To be completed by 2018 Romanian metro operator Metrorex has unveiled plans to modernise two metro lines in the country’s capital Bucharest. The project will be financed by the European Union funds and the country’s government.
In total, the two projects are estimated to be worth about €538 million, reported local news site Romania-Insider.com. Under the plan, Metrorex will modernise the metro lines 2 and 4, with construction works scheduled to be completed by 2018. The EU is to cover some 85% of the investments, while the Romanian government will provide the remaining 15% of the funds.
The metro line 2, which extends between the stations of Pipera and Berceni, will be overhauled under a €409 million project. The investment will allow to modernise the stations and fit the line with new trains. The project is scheduled to be launched in December 2014, and it is designed to be completed in the second half of 2017. The investment to overhaul the capital’s line 4, which extends between the stations of Gara de Nord and Straulesti, will be facilitated through some €129 million in funding, allowing to modernise stations. The project is expected to be completed in the second half of 2016.
Romania's capital has a metro network which consists of four metro lines and 51 stations, and is fitted with an aggregate length of 69 km of double track gauge, according to data released by the operator.
Publicly-owned Metrorex was set up in 1975 and is headquartered in the Romanian capital. The metropolitan area of Bucharest has a total population of more than 2.2 million.
