Romanian rolling stock maker Grampet has unveiled plans to launch production of a new locomotive model at its plant in Craiova, in Romania’s southern part.
The Terra Nova is fitted with two 630 hp diesel engines, the firm said in a statement. Grampet is cooperating on the project with US industrial group Caterpillar which will supply the engines. The new model will be manufactured by Grampet’s local subsidiary Electroputere VFU Craiova. The production facility in Craiova has an output capacity of three such locomotives per month, according to data released by Grampet.
To develop, test and certify the new locomotive, the firm made an initial investment of about €1.5 million. On a related note, Grampet is cooperating with Caterpillar on a number of other railway manufacturing projects in Romania.
The Romanian producer says it is aiming to position the Terra Nova as a low-priced alternative to other locomotive models which are popular among private rail freight operators.
The locomotive will have a price tag of some €1 million, the company said. To date, 12 undisclosed railway operators active in the EU market have placed orders for the Terra Nova, according to Gratian Calin, the vice president of the Romanian manufacturer. Under the plan, the locomotives will be delivered in 2015.
Set up in 1999 and headquartered in Romania’s capital Bucharest, Grampet says it is the largest private rail group in Romania and in South-Eastern Europe, with entities in a further eight EU member states. In the Romanian market, the firm owns the biggest private railway operator, Grup Feroviar Roman.
